English
Keystage 2 and 3
(In 2008, the Government announced that KS3 tests would be abolished. Our experience is that it is during KS3 that many students first show major signs of difficulty. We therefore continue to emphasise support at KS3.)
The syllabus for these is determined by the government through the QCA. We provide support for these, although our experience is that student problems are due primarily to poor spelling and grammar, and to an unwillingness to read. We can help development of these areas, and have a substantial library of books selected to encourage reading (with a particular emphasis on books likely to interest boys).
GCSE
The content of English courses is strongly defined by the government. Each Examination Board provides its own emphasis, but there is considerable overlap. We are able to help with all topics in English Language and in Literature.
In common with mathematics the syllabus for English will be changing with effect from September 2010. Most of the Examination Boards are introducing several new courses, including ‘functional English’. We will be supporting all new courses.
